Toy Age Range Research.

Following on from the previous research, the subsequent section delves into the specific kinds of toys that engage babies of specific age ranges by primarily observing competing current products on the market. The objective of this section was two-fold; to inform the selection of toys to include in bundles and the playground, and to understand the strengths and weaknesses of existing products on the market to better position the proposed product and develop a unique selling proposition.

Toy Age Range Research & Examples.

The subsequent sections contain details about the key aspects, focal points and engagement methods that existing toys on the market employ, as well as supplementary examples of existing products on the market. These key focus points and examples would be subsequently used in the second phase of the project to materialize the vision of the concept into a concept product that contains a data-driven layout and key unique selling point.

Key Features & Examples of toys to consider  for 6-month-olds:

  • Developmental Appropriateness: Focus should be placed on toys that align with the baby's developmental stage, offering activities that promote fine motor skills, tactile exploration, visual tracking, and cause-and-effect understanding. Look for toys that cater to the 5–6 month age range [1].

    • Example: The Lovevery The Senser Play Kit [3] is meticulously crafted for 5–6-month-olds, with toys like a spinning rainbow toy and a grabbable rainbow ball to aid sensory exploration and body control.

  • Multi-Sensory Engagement: Toys that engage multiple senses simultaneously, incorporating features like colour-changing lights, varied textures, and different materials to enhance the baby's sensory experience [2].

    • Example:  SmartNoggin NogginStik Light-Up Rattle [4] promotes cognitive development through colour-changing lights, tactile engagement, and an integrated rattle, encouraging a holistic sensory experience.

  • Portability and Convenience: The ease of carrying and attaching toys for on-the-go entertainment should be considered, and a focus should be placed on toys that are easily transportable and adaptable to various surfaces, enhancing convenience for parents [1].

    • Example: Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes Toy [5], a portable musical toy, plays classical melodies and lights up, providing convenient entertainment during travel or diaper changes.

  • Versatility: Toys that offer various play options and can adapt to different developmental stages should be chosen. Versatile toys provide long-lasting value, ensuring continued engagement as the baby grows.

    • Example: Bright Starts 4-in-1 Groovin' Kicks Piano Gym [6] grows with the baby, transitioning from a play gym to a seated piano and drum toy, offering ongoing stimulation.

  • Educational Value: Toys with educational benefits, such as introducing colours, shapes, numbers, and animals, should be prioritized. Interactive features that encourage learning and exploration enhance the baby's cognitive development.

    • Example: VTech Busy Learners Activity Cube [7] features buttons, knobs, and motion sensors that teach animal names, noises, numbers, and letters, providing both entertainment and educational value.

  • Parental Guidance and Support: Toys with play guides or parental support should be considered, offering caregivers expert tips, at-home activity ideas, and ways to foster the baby's development through interactive play [1].

    • Example: The Lovevery The Senser Play Kit [3] includes a play guide for parents with expert tips, at-home activity ideas, and ways to support the baby's development, ensuring a guided and enriched play experience.

  • Durability: Proper and durable toys should be chosen, as they can withstand the exploration and playfulness of a growing baby without presenting safety concerns.

    • Example: Sassy Stacks of Circles Stacking Ring STEM Learning Toy [8] is made to withstand baby play, offering a durable option for stacking, grasping, and exploring various textures.

  • Engaging Sounds: Toys that produce pleasing sounds to captivate the baby's auditory senses should be considered, as they promote curiosity and responsiveness.

    • Example: Manhattan Toy Baby Whoozit Activity Toy [9] offers stimulating sounds like crinkles, rattles, and squeaks, engaging the baby's auditory senses during play.

  • Interactive Features: Toys with interactive elements such as buttons, toggles, and motion sensors that respond to the baby's actions should be prioritised, fostering engagement and understanding of cause and effect.

    • Example: The Fisher-Price 2-Sided Steady Speed Panda Walker [10] features interactive elements like a turnable steering wheel, light-up horn, and buttons for exploring numbers and letters, providing engaging play for the baby as it grows.

  • Safety: All chosen toys should be soft, non-toxic, and free from small parts that could be a choking hazard. Additionally, they should be easy to clean, as babies tend to put toys in their mouths.

    • Example: B. Toys by Battat Baby Blocks [11] - Soft, squeezable blocks that are safe for babies and won't hurt them even if they fall.

  • Motor Skills Development: Toys that encourage the development of fine and gross motor skills are crucial for a growing baby [2].

    • Example: Oball Rattle And Roll Sports Race Car [12] - An Oball, car, and rattle in one, promoting the development of pincer grasp and grip strength.

  • Age-Appropriate Complexity: Toys chosen should match the baby's developmental stage and offer a level of complexity that challenges but doesn't frustrate them is imperative [2].

    • Example: Fisher-Price 123 Crawl With Me Puppy [13] - A crawling puppy toy that motivates the baby to move and interacts with them across different modes.

  • Interactive and Educational: Toys that foster interaction, language development, and learning greatly benefit a baby's cognitive growth.

    • Example: LeapFrog Learn & Groove Color Play Drum [14] - A musical drum that lights up and teaches songs in both English and Spanish, supporting gross motor development.

  • Adaptability and Longevity: Emphasis should be placed on modular toys or a set that can be adjusted as the baby grows, providing continuous engagement.

    • Example: V Tech 6-in-1 Tunnel of Fun [15] - A versatile 6-in-1 toy with a crawl tunnel, hanging sensory toys, piano, roller ball, and more.
